This month, Grant Tigwell Head Boatman on Loch Tay, sits in the hot seat and faces the Ghillies’s 10!
1. SSFS: What is the biggest salmon you have ever caught?
GT: It would have to be a cracking fresh 25lbs spring salmon that gave an unforgettable fight. The runs from the fish were spine tingling!
2. SSFS; What is the most memorable salmon you have ever caught?
GT: I was taking three female clients across Loch Tay so they could use the rest room, when we hooked a big salmon. It was a very rough day and they did not want to play the fish. It took me forty minutes to get the fish landed in the boat and release it before we carried on to the lodges. All I can say is the three women were definitely sitting crossed legged at the end of it!
3. SSFS: What is your favourite fly?
GT: I don’t fish with the fly on Loch Tay as we troll but I love using the copper Rapala
4. SSFS: What is your favourite fly?
GT: I Know this is probably a bit biased but Loch Tay has to be the best salmon pool on earth, with the most stunning backdrop!
5. SSFS: If there was one place in the world you could salmon fish, where would it be and why?
GT: It would have to be Russia because of the stunning rivers and the amazing quality of their salmon.
6. SSFS: What is the most unusual sight you have seen on the river?
GT: A waterspout shooting across Loch Tay it was a truly awesome and unforgettable sight.
7. SSFS: What is the worst conditions in which you have seen a salmon being caught?
GT: I once landed a salmon whilst battling 50 mph winds on my hands and knees in the bottom of the boat. I would have to say this is what you really call extreme fishing!
8. SSFS: What do you love about being a ghillie?
GT: I love my office being outside and meeting a variety of people from around the world. It gives me great pleasure being able to share my passion for fishing with others. I also just love having my best mate, Isla the dog, watching her poker rod and waiting for that take.
9. SSFS: What is your salmon fishing pet hate?
GT: I hate an untidy boat.
10. SSFS: What is your favourite dram?
GT: You cannot beat a Macallan’s single malt to warm the cockles of your heart!
